Germany 🇩🇪

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

Student assistant (m/f) in the field of remote sensing and water quality

Background
Historically, water quality has been measured from space mainly using multispectral sensors. However, in the last 5 years a new generation of spaceborne hyperspectral sensors has been launched, such as DESIS, PRISMA and most recently EnMAP. The Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program (EnMAP) is a satellite remote sensing mission that uses high-resolution imaging spectroscopy to monitor and characterise the Earth’s environment on a global scale. This student assistant position will support the maintenance of existing algorithms implemented in the EnMAP Box (https://enmap-box.readthedocs.io/en/latest/), a Python plugin in QGIS, a free and open source geospatial analysis software. Other tasks include testing improvements of the algorithms and the possibility to participate in field campaigns in German lakes.

We are looking for a student assistant to support our research activities as soon as possible. The position is limited until the end of 2024 and long-term employment is expressly desired. The place of employment is Bremerhaven.

Tasks

  • Implementation, adaptation and maintenance of existing algorithms in the field of remote sensing and satellite data, with focus on the EnMAP satellite mission.
  • Support field campaigns in Germany.

Requirements

  • Strong Python programming skills.
  • Knowledge of Git and GitHub with additional knowledge of PIP and CONDA for package release would be highly appreciated.
  • Some experience of HPC, Bash programming and the Linux environment is desirable.
  • Good German and English language skills.
  • Flexibility and independence
