ABOUT TROUT UNLIMITED
Trout Unlimited (TU) takes care of the rivers and clean water that trout, salmon and communities around the country depend on. We believe the most complex and seemingly insurmountable challenges can be solved when people come together and get to work. We are a nationwide network of advocates, outdoor-enthusiasts, volunteers, anglers and staff dedicated to protecting places where trout and salmon thrive and recovering rivers and fisheries that need help and making our water resources more resilient to climate change. We want to make sure healthy rivers and fisheries are available for all people to use and enjoy. The project manager joins a team of 14 TU staff in Alaska and works directly for the Alaska Director of Habitat Restoration.
TU seeks to hire a self-motivated and highly capable person to implement restoration projects to benefit aquatic resources and native and wild fish populations in southcentral and interior Alaska including the Mat-Su basin, Kenai Peninsula, and the Yukon River drainage. The project manager will be responsible for working cooperatively with partners to develop new projects and continue ongoing restoration projects. The position requires an individual who is self-motivated, well organized, action oriented, collaborative, and capable of working well with a team having diverse backgrounds and personalities.
Competitive candidates for this position will need to demonstrate strong project management skills and technical abilities related to river restoration, hydrology, ecology, and partnership-building. The successful applicant manages projects but also works with TU staff and stakeholders to secure additional funding for project activities, conceptualize and develop new projects, and functions as part of the team assisting other staff as necessary. The Project Manager will be expected to manage projects from conception to completion and be a leader in working on project-oriented habitat restoration and conservation. This position requires travel and intermittent field work and is based out of a home office in southcentral Alaska.
Requirements
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the development, design, coordination, and implementation of fisheries and aquatic restoration projects to benefit aquatic species and overall ecological function in priority watersheds.
- Identify funding sources, lead or participate in the preparation of grant proposals to secure funding for habitat restoration projects, and manage grant agreements and budgets.
- Work with supervisor and other TU staff on priority project and Alaska Region program strategies.
- Foster and maintain positive relationships with landowners, Tribes, state and federal agencies and other stakeholders with varying political and social backgrounds.
- Attend, participate, and represent TU in meetings relevant to TU’s mission.

Requirements
- At least 5 years of applied experience in stream and aquatic habitat restoration, including project planning, design, and construction management, as well as an understanding of stream processes, hydrology, and engineering principles related to stream restoration and aquatic organism passage.
- Experience with riverine restoration techniques, project management fundamentals, construction management basics, and complex multi-party negotiations.
- Experience with project development, including implementation and management of construction projects that involve development, partner coordination, securing funds and managing budgets, contractor selection and oversight, and reporting.
- Functional knowledge of conservation, aquatic ecology, fisheries biology, hydrology, and/or watershed processes.
- Understanding of how to enable local knowledge to help shape projects and how to work respectfully in partnership with local leaders and rural communities.
- Developed grant and technical writing skills.
- Superior interpersonal skills and ability to work constructively with a wide range of partners and personalities.
- Capable of simultaneously managing multiple complex projects with multiple funding agreements.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as research and analytic skills.
- Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Demonstrated experience indicating ability to prioritize workload, to be highly motivated and self-directed.
- Comfortable with public speaking and meeting facilitation.
- Have a passion for fisheries conservation and for protecting and restoring rivers and streams.
- Experience using the cores suite of MS Office programs including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work comfortably in remote field sites and periodically travel for multiple days, sometimes to remote project sites.
- Hold a valid driver’s license.
- Be able to lift 40 pounds, travel over uneven terrain, and have experience, knowledge, and be comfortable with travel in remote Alaska, including via small aircraft, ATV, and small boats on rivers, lakes, and the ocean.
- Have a sense of humor, willingness to adapt and seek solutions to challenges, and not take yourself too seriously.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with small to large-scale, complex, aquatic restoration projects and understanding of applicable construction methods and practices.
- Understanding of engineering design concepts; restoration project construction and management, and contract development and administration.
- Extensive familiarity with and previous employment in Alaska.
- Experience with project permitting for aquatic restoration projects and in-water work.
