Scope 

  • Support the development and implementation of IISD’s cross-programmatic strategies and approaches to international institutions and decision-making processes relating to sustainable development, including climate change, biodiversity, and plastics.
  • Support cross-programmatic initiatives and coordination.
  • Coordinate the development and delivery of common narratives and submissions on multilateral agenda topics and issues.
  • Coordinate internal IISD sessions and capacity building on select international institutions and processes.
  • Coordinate internal IISD working groups, preparation of submissions, and positions on select multilateral decision-making processes.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Vice President of Global Strategies, the Senior Director Tracking Progress, and relevant IISD program leads, develop IISD’s vision and approaches to selected international institutions and processes relating to sustainable development.
  • In collaboration with the Vice President of Global Strategies, the Senior Director Tracking Progress, and relevant IISD program leads, support the development of modalities, procedures, and guidelines related to IISD’s engagement with relevant international institutions and processes relating to sustainable development.
  • Support the definition, scope, and development of appropriate strategies for engagement with key processes and negotiations at the institute level, in line with IISD’s Strategic Direction, to strengthen IISD’s ability to achieve its mission across programs.
  • Coordinate with IISD Communications and relevant IISD program leads on common narratives and develop strategic communications outputs for major conferences, meetings, and events.
  • Lead internal cross-programmatic engagement and identify focal points within each program to identify and define IISD’s strategic priorities and common narratives ahead of relevant meetings and conferences.
  • Facilitate cross-programmatic communication and coordination among all relevant programs, developing agendas and producing meeting summaries.
  • Establish and actively maintain a network of partners and contacts engaged with all relevant international institutions and processes.
  • Keep up to date on emerging international issues and processes relating to sustainable development.
  • Provide periodic updates to IISD leadership on IISD roles and engagement with relevant international processes and contribute to annual reports and other corporate publications as required.

 Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

  • Experience with international institutions and processes relating to sustainable development.
  • Ability to manage time and inputs to deliver research projects to a high standard, on time, and within budget.
  • A track record of producing high-quality reports and analyses in a short period of time and for different audiences.
  • A post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., public policy, economics, law, politics, international relations, development studies, environmental studies).
  • Experience working with governments in a policy support and/or advocacy role.
  • 5+ years of experience in a policy research environment (e.g., a think tank, university, government, intergovernmental organization, or civil society organization) conducting applied research and policy analysis.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of and experience working on international decision-making processes relating to climate change, biodiversity, and/or plastics.

Skills, Competencies, and Attributes

Essential

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; the ability to communicate complex ideas in a succinct and clear manner to people from a wide range of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated organizational and planning ability, including the ability to lead project groups and coordinate meetings and events.
  • Motivated self-starter with an ability to work independently, meet tight deadlines, and manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Written and oral fluency in English.
  • Excellent IT skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work effectively on more than one topic/issue at the same time and to pick up knowledge on new topics quickly.
  • Strong commitment to the ideals, values, and mission of IISD.
  • Availability to travel internationally as required.

Desirable

  • Ability to work (write and present) in French and/or Spanish.
  • Experience working for—or with—governments and stakeholders in developing countries.

Hybrid where IISD has offices in Ottawa, Toronto and Winnipeg
