Volunteering with VSA
Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) is not your typical volunteering agency, we are committed to building sustainable communities across the Pacific. If you’re an experienced Water and Sanitation, Hygiene climate specialist, looking for an extraordinary overseas experience in the Pacific to build into your field of expertise – working collaboratively with UNICEF, then read on, as we have an exciting opportunity in store for you!
Our Partner Organisation – UNICEF
UNICEF works with and for disadvantaged children and adolescents in Solomon Islands. The organisation promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child. Working with their partners, UNICEF takes action that promotes health and nutrition, child protection, education, early childhood development, social inclusion, disaster risk reduction and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).
An area that UNICEF has become increasingly engaged in is climate action. Children are the least equipped to deal with climate impacts and disproportionally suffer from their effects. In the Pacific region children are exposed to water scarcity; coastal flooding; cyclones, and air pollution. Girls, children with disabilities, and migrant children are even more vulnerable.

The Country
The Solomon Islands has over 900 islands, 5,000 rural villages and 550,000 people. Between 1999 and 2003 it experienced a period of conflict which took a heavy toll on the country and left a need for reconciliation and on-going peace and security measures.
A request for assistance by the government in 2003 led Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific Island countries to form the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) which restored peace and security.
